Bexley School’s Primary Cup Winners!
After being runners-up last year, Merton Court were looking to go one better than the 2017 final and started well with Demi giving the hosts an early lead, with an interesting finish. St Peter Chanel fought back and brought the scores level from a scrappy corner. With a host of missed opportunities, the half ended 1-1.
The team had a chance to regroup during the interval. The Merton Court attack were left frustrated by the St Peter Chanel keeper along with the woodwork countless times throughout the game. It seemed as if the goal had been charmed and the winner would never come for the home side.
That was until Zhechko placed the ball down around 20 yards out for a free kick. He rifled the shot into the top left hand corner for a spectacular goal, only for St Peter Chanel to equalise during a lapse in concentration from the Merton Court defence.
With the game poised at 2-2; extra time seemed imminent. That was until Charlie flew up the right wing skipping countless tackles before sliding the ball home between the keeper’s legs. Hearts still racing, St Peter Chanel were on the attack; only through some stout defending from Jack were we able to stop a third equalising goal.
With moments left, Zhechko sent an out-swinging corner into the box to land on the outside of Reis’ right boot and into the Peter Chanel goal. Nerves had subsidised, the game had been clearly won!
Merton Court stuck to their task even when the winner looked like it would never come. They showed great passion, desire and commitment throughout the whole game. It has been a fantastic season for the boys and they fully deserve their cup final glory.
