LOCAL COMMUNITY AND BEYOND

Sidcup's oldest established prep school, Merton Court, plays an important part in both supporting the local community and in participating in local events. The school has developed a close relationship with its parish and our pupils demonstrate consideration and respect for residents and the local environment. The school takes part in switching on the Christmas lights at the start of the Festive Season in Sidcup while our choir sings Christmas Carols to warm the hearts of the people of the town. They also visit and entertain the residents of Frognal House Care Home several times a year.

ST JOHN'S CHURCH

St John's is home to our yearly Harvest Festival, which provides a great opportunity for us to give thanks for all that we receive and also to think of those less fortunate. All food and donations brought in by the children goes to support the homeless at the 'Manna Centre' in London. Keeping up a lovely tradition, we also hold our Christmas Carol Service here every year. In Advent and in Lent, Reverend Sealy helps us in our preparation by leading our school assemblies. An exciting part of the school year is when each year group has the chance to experience cross-curricular Art, History or English lessons at St John's, using it as a living resource.

CHARITIES AND FUNDRAISING EVENTS

We have developed a number of long-standing relationships with local charities and are often involved in fund-raising activities. Each term we hold regular events to support our chosen charities.

Spring Term 2017

Our charity for this term is the RNIB.
We had a special ‘Charities Day’ and wore ‘Spots to raise lots!’ Krista from the RNIB came to tell us all about what the charity does and we then presented her with a cheque for £922.70.

Our Summer term will be raising money for the Simone Cowland Trust.

Autumn Term 2016

Our chosen charities for the year ahead are the RNIB (Royal National Institution for Blind people), Heart UK and the Simone Cowland Trust (Cystic Fibrosis).
During the autumn term we will be raising money for Heart UK.
We had a very successful cake sale raising £126.35. Our Christmas production raised a staggering £594.29. The school choir sang Christmas Carols in Sidcup High Street and raised £174.20. We also had a fun day wearing our Christmas jumpers which raised £515.00. The grand total raised for Heart UK was £1409.84 which we think is pretty amazing!

Spring term 2016

We raised 1,149.50 from our 'Charities Day' which included pyjama dressing up, cake sales and sponsored 'no homework'.
Our total so far to our chosen charities for the year, 'Cancer Research UK' and 'Make a Wish Foundation UK', is a huge 5,022.80.

Autumn term 2015

A new year brings new charities chosen by S4 and our School Council. This year our chosen charities are 'Cancer Research' and 'Make a Wish Foundation'. As we know Cancer Research is a very important charity that relies on donations to fund scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer . The 'Make a Wish Foundation' helps to grant magical wishes to enrich the lives of children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.

FOMC again organised a wonderful 'Coffee Morning' for the MacMillan Charity. This is always a very well attended event and raised over 920! Thank you to FOMC and to everyone who came and supported us.

Harvest Festival took place at St John's Church. It was a lovely service led by S4 with lots of donations made. As last year, Reverend Sealy and St John's supported the homeless at the 'Manna Centre' in London. I am sure they were extremely grateful.

Summer term 2015

S4 had a very successful 'Business Challenge' raising 496 for their chosen charity BRAKE. This brought our total amount raised for BRAKE to 1203. They were very pleased with all our hard work over the last year and even came to see us! Kidscare was our other chosen charity. Through fundraising events we successfully raised 738 for this worthy cause.
