EAL

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

At Merton Court School we are aware that bilingualism is a strength and that EAL pupils have a valuable contribution to make. We recognise that all children have individual learning needs and ensure that personalised learning is at the heart of our teaching. We encourage achievement of the highest standard and therefore ensure that all EAL children are provided with the opportunity to learn and make progress. Their progress is evaluated and reviewed regularly with the aim of ensuring that they fulfil their full academic potential.

Staff at Merton Court respond positively to pupil’s ability to speak other languages. We believe that cultural and linguistic diversity is a rich resource for the whole school. We share and celebrate different languages and cultures through our Modern Foreign Language, Geography, Religious Education and History lessons. We also plan events each year to celebrate our diverse culture, the most recent events have included:

  •  Chinese story telling workshop
  •  Chinese New Year forest school sessions
  •  Celebrating international languages day by inviting all children to dress in their National clothing
  •  Performing National dances at our International Breakfast event
  • Flamenco dancing workshops
  •  Irish dancing assembly celebrating St Patrick’s day
  •  Passport around the world day
  •  As well as having a special Persian menu to celebrate Persian day
  •  Assemblies and displays also often link to languages, cultures and countries.
